As a condition for using WSSB Network, I understand the use of the Network and access to public networks (i.e., The Internet) is a privilege, I agree to the following:

  1. I will abide by such rules as adopted by the WSSB including the Technology Ethics Regulations
  2. WSSB has the right to review any material stored on any system provided by WSSB and to edit or remove any material. I hereby waive any right of privacy that I may otherwise have in and to such material.
  3. All information and services available on The Internet and WSSB’s Network are placed there for general informational purposes. I use WSSB’s Network at my own risk.
  4. WSSB does not warrant the function of WSSB’s Network or any of the networks accessible through WSSB’s Network to meet any specific requirements I may have, or that WSSB’s Network will be error free or uninterrupted. WSSB staff are not liable for any damages incurred in connection with the use, operation, or inability to use WSSB’s Network.
  5. In consideration for using WSSB’s Network and having access to public networks, I hereby release WSSB and its officers, employees, and agents from any claims and damages arising from my use, or inability to use WSSB’s Network .
  6. I have read and agree to comply with the WSSB Technology Ethics Regulations, I also understand that my violation of the regulation is unethical and may constitute a criminal offense. Should I commit any violation, my access privileges may be revoked and disciplinary action may be taken against me.

I understand that this access is designed for educational purposes. has taken precautions to eliminate controversial material. However, I also recognize it is impossible for WSSB’s Network  to restrict access to all controversial materials and I will not hold WSSB responsible for materials acquired on the network. I accept full responsibility for supervision if and when my child's use is not in a school setting. I accept full responsibility, to the full extent of the law, for any intentional destruction of the hardware or software of WSSB. I hereby give permission to WSSB to issue an account for my child and certify that the information on this form is correct.

Technology Ethics Regulations

 

Unless otherwise specified, the following regulation shall apply equally to students, employees, volunteers, and contractors employed by WSSB. Some employees, volunteers, and contractors may have additional obligations due to the nature of their positions and or access privileges.

 

Washington State School for the Blind Network (WSSB’s Network) is a combination of local and wide area networks, linking computers in all WSSB facilities together and providing access to public networks. A prerequisite for the use of WSSB’s Network  is an authorization form completed by each person requesting access to WSSB’s Network . Any use without authorization is prohibited.

 

WSSB’s Network  and the messages transmitted and documents created on it are the property of Washington State School for the Blind. WSSB will supervise the use of such property.

 

Ethical Use Requirements: The following are WSSB Ethical Use Requirements. A copy of the requirement will be distributed to each user of WSSB’s Network .

 

I.       Network:

A.  The purpose of Washington State School for the Blind Network (WSSB’s Network) is to promote the exchange of information to further education and research and is consistent with the mission of Washington Sate School for the Blind. Subscriptions to List-servers, bulletin boards, and on‑line services must be pre‑approved by the Technology Committee.

B.  The following items are prohibited:

1.      Any use of WSSB’s Network  for illegal activity.

2.      Use of WSSB’s Network  to access obscene or pornographic material.

3.      Sending material likely to be offensive or objectionable to recipients

4.      Using programs that harass WSSB’s Network  users or infiltrate any computing system and or damage the software components.

5.      WSSB’s Network  shall not be used for private or commercial offerings of products or services for sale or to solicit products or services.

 

II.    Security ‑ The following security provisions are required:

A.  Users will respect the rights, property, and confidentiality of others and will not improperly access, misappropriate or misuse the files, data or information of others.

B.  Users may not share their account with anyone or leave the account open or unattended.

C.  Users will keep all accounts and passwords confidential and not accessible to others.

D.  Users will change passwords regularly, using combinations of at least 6 letters and numbers.

E.   Users are responsible for making back‑up copies of documents critical to them.

 

III. Software ‑ The following precautions are required:

A.  Users are responsible to take precautions to prevent viruses on their own hardware and software and WSSB's hardware and software.

B.  Users shall register software with their building's system manager.

C.  The illegal installation of copyrighted software or files for use on district computers is prohibited.

 

IV. E‑Mail:

A.  E‑mail is provided for the purpose of exchanging information consistent with the mission of Washington State School for the Blind. The following uses are prohibited:

1.      WSSB's E‑mail shall not be used for private or commercial offerings, of products or services for sale or to solicit products or services.

2.      E‑mail shall not be used for political or religious purposes.

3.      E‑mail messages are subject to WSSB review and deletion at any time with or without notice.

4.      E‑mail shall not be used to broadcast messages outside a school site without prior WSSB approval.

 

B.  Mail should be deleted regularly from an E‑mail directory to conserve file space.

 

Violation of any of the conditions of use described in this regulation may be cause for disciplinary action.

 

Interpretation, application and modification of this Ethical Use Regulation is within the sole discretion of WSSB Technology Committee. Any questions or issues regarding this policy should be directed to WSSB administration.

 

Copyrighted Software: Users of software shall abide by the software licensing agreement provided by the software publisher. Without notice, any equipment on WSSB's property may be audited for compliance. Software piracy is the illegal use or possession of copyrighted software and is strictly prohibited.

 

Site Licensed Software: Site licensed software is that which can be used on any equipment at the site for which the software was purchased. This software can be copied legally to equipment at the site belonging to the licensee. Unless permitted by the license, it shall not be copied to equipment not owned by the licensee. Before equipment is moved from one site to another, any site-licensed software shall be removed.

 

Network Use Software: Network use software is purchased for use by a limited number of concurrent users. This software is launched from a server, and concurrent use is regulated by server software. Unless permitted by the license, this software shall not be copied off of the server to individual hard drives or storage devices.

 

Single License Software: Single license software can be owned by a school, a department or sub-organization within WSSB. Such software shall not be copied to multiple machines or media in violation of the license agreement.

 

Privately Owned Software: Software owned by individuals in WSSB may be brought into WSSB under the following conditions:

C.  The user can prove ownership.

                     1.         The user adheres to the licensing agreement for that software.

                     2.         The user has registered the software with the Software Company.

                     3.         The user has registered the software with the building's system manager and received permission to use the software.

 

Property Rights: WSSB has the right to specify who uses its hardware and software and the information contained therein, under what circumstances, and to what purposes. Hardware and software purchased by WSSB belongs only to WSSB.  Neither employees, volunteers, or students in WSSB have ownership rights to any

hardware or software loaned to them by WSSB.  Private or personal business use of WSSB hardware and software is strictly prohibited and will subject the violator to disciplinary action.

 

No person shall have exclusive use of WSSB hardware and software unless authorized by the superintendent and or designee.

 

Data Security: WSSB assumes no responsibility or liability if documents stored on WSSB hardware and software are lost or damaged, nor will WSSB be responsible for security violations beyond the discipline of violators.

 

False Entry or Alteration: No student, volunteer, or WSSB employee shall make any false entry or alternation of any document, either paper or electronic, used or intended to be used in connection with the operation of any building within WSSB nor shall any student open or alter official school documents or private documents, either paper or electronic.

 

Guidelines: The superintendent or designee shall publish guidelines to facilitate the implementation of this regulation and related policies.

 

Enforcement: WSSB shall rigorously uphold laws pertaining to the use of technology, hardware, and software and the information contained in them or generated by their use. Anyone found to be violating such laws shall be subject to suit for civil damages and discipline by WSSB.
