Washington State and the Office of Superintendent of Pubic Instruction have adopted a fabulous health curriculum for HIV/STD prevention. The KNOW HIV/STD Curriculum has been reviewed and approved for medical accuracy by the Washington State Department of Health, Office on HIV/AIDS, as required by Washington State law.

The KNOW HIV/STD Prevention Curriculum is provided in four grade level manuals (Grades 5/6, 7/8, 9/10, and 11/12. The curriculum provides opportunities that include:

· Acquiring knowledge about certain diseases and how the human body works to prevent and attack illnesses.

· The development of positive attitudes to avoid risks.

· Skill building activities to enable students to engage in health enhancing behaviors.

The Washington State School for the Blind has reviewed this curriculum and plans to add its subject matter to components of its already adopted sexual education FLASH (Family Life and Sexual Health)and AWARE (Abstinence, Wait and Relationship Education) curriculum during the 2006-2007 school year.
